Trombone Choir and Emory Remington

Emory Remington may be best known in the trombone world today for developing the modern trombone choir sound and repertoire.  This is a cool link to information about Emory Remington and the Eastman Trombone Choir.

Remington taught trombone at Eastman from 1922-1971.  In that time, he worked with a large number of trombonists.  Many of those trombonists are still performing, teaching and conducting in the world today.  Emory Remington was a major influence not only on how trombone choir is used in the collegiate setting, but also on how trombone is taught at the collegiate level today.  Even teachers who didn't work directly with Remington use his methods in lessons and trombone choir regularly.

Once Remington's students held collegiate teaching positions throughout the United States, trombone choirs started to exist all over the country.  Today, most trombone studios have a trombone choir that rehearses and performs regularly.  I hope to explore the pedagogical reasons for this in my next blog and explore some of the literature and performance opportunities in following posts.

Check out this video of the eastman trombone choir performing Gabrielli!
